As a child I was not a fan of uniforms. The headmaster of our newly built high school was very hot on uniforms. The year was 1957 and it was vivid green as far as the eye could see! The girls’ ankle socks were vivid green, as were the knickers that we had to wear when running round the sports field. We girls had to have indoor shoes as well as outdoor shoes. Getting back to the socks, if I dared to wear white ones we risked detention .
Can you believe it now , in this day and age? We had to wear a beret at all times when in uniform. I re-call strolling around town after school one day and a prefect telling me to put my beret on.

It seems like a hundred years ago, when I walk past the school now. In place of the bike sheds there are parking spaces. It seems like most of the students have cars when in my day very few of the parents owned one.

During lunchtime they pour out of the school and I am shocked . The girls wear tights! They have skirts barely covering their backsides. I cannot believe this phenomenon. When we played hockey we wore shorts that were actually a divided skirt. One day the games teachers had us all kneel on the ground while she went along the row taking note of the length. If there were too many inches of leg showing above the knee you got a tap on the head with her hockey stick. I think today she’d get clumped back!

Our teachers wore their cloaks and mortar boards a lot of the time. I can still see the maths teacher running after us, cloak trailing in the breeze , when my friend and I had popped out for a quick smoke . We were not supposed to leave the building at break .
